FAQ

New to eventing and want to know answers to some frequently asked questions?

Over the years, Kate has been asked a range of questions, and below are a selection.  If you have any more, please ask!

How do I enter an event?  Entries are made online, through Nominate. All Events in NSW have their schedules on this website, so keep an eye on it, as clinics are also entered through this website.

What does it cost to enter?  The fees required to enter are found on the schedule, which can be found on Nominate and in The Eventer magazine, the quarterly magazine for ENSW members.

How do I book a yard? Bookings for yards can be made online with your entry.  There are plenty of permanent steel yards at Equestrian Park, and Over the Top yards are also available for  hire.

How long will the course be? All grades have maximum and minimum requirements such as time allowed on course, as well as jumping efforts required.  You can refer to the rules for these guidelines, which can be found on the Eventing NSW website, the link to the rules is here.  Maps from the 2012 CNC are available for downloading here.

How hard will the course be?  This is something that we can’t answer for you as it depends on your own ability! Ask your coach or someone who knows what you’re capabilities are, and someone who has been to Canberra previously.

Where can I get a copy of my dressage test? Go to the Eventing NSW website and you can access tests there.

Where can I stay? Google is a very helpful tool.  Equestrian Park is located in the suburb of Curtin and there are several options for accommodation nearby.  The Statesman Hotel is extremely closeby and officials often are put up there.  If you tend to disagree strongly with your dressage judge, maybe stay elsewhere.

Are spectators allowed to attend?   Yes spectators are most welcome.  There is no cost to come along.  Look for a parking space on the main entry road or near the canteen. We usually put up signage stating where you are not allowed to park.  Floats are allowed to park in most areas so just be mindful of horses when parking.   Usually we have a canteen and coffee van operating for refreshments.  We are also quite close to Curtin shops and Coolamon Court, so you can also pick up some picnic style food on the way or at lunch time.  There is some grandstand-style seating areas near the sand arenas.  Action will also take place on the grassed area, and on the cross-country course. Spectators can wander around the course as long as they keep out of the way of riders.  You can pick up a map from the secretary on the day.  We recommend you bring a fold-up chair.

Why are entry fees so expensive?  This is a commonly moaned complaint amongst all eventers.  There are numerous expenses involved in holding an event of this nature.  NCHTA has to hire toilets, the grounds, pay for officials travelling expenses, cater for all the hardworking volunteers (of which there are about 100) as well as building and maintaining the cross country course.  Also, there are the costs of the PA hire, prize money and rugs.  Bunnings does very well out of us! Ambulance hire alone is approximately $1500 per event.  We try to keep our entry fees as reasonable as possible, but have to make sure that we don’t run at too significant a loss, or we would not be able to continue to operate.

  1. I have gone to the link for a copy of the dressage test for the Newcomers class – can you please confirm it is the Preliminary 1.1 test that I would be riding, or the Preliminary P1 (2011) test?
    Thanks,
